Mens Captain

As the course lies idle, hidden by a blanket of snow and ice, your new Committee is actively laying plans for an exciting new season ahead. Many of you will, I hope, have got to know me over the past couple of years, but for those who haven’t, my name is Martin Lang and I have the privilege to be your Club Captain, again - for the season 2010/11.

I have enjoyed working on the Members’ Committee for the past nine years, as Secretary for six years, as Captain in 2008-2009 and latterly as Competitions Secretary and Vice Captain to Steve Cooper who has captained us so well over the past twelve months. I take this opportunity to thank Steve for his tireless work on behalf of the members and to welcome Ken Wrintmore as my Vice Captain.

Entry for all Club competitions has increased dramatically year on year over the past two years and we are now getting, right across the board, some 40% more entries than we were two years ago. Whilst that means that competition to win is tougher, it also means that the prizes are considerably better, too - particularly now that we are all remembering to pay our entry fees for the Knockout competitions, without too much nagging!

The more involved we get in Club competitions and events the more enjoyment each of us will have. The golfing facilities here at Cumberwell Park are second to none - so let’s each of us enjoy them to the full! As I hope you will all have noticed, the Pro Shop is now running a Qualifying Stableford competition every week that there is no other competition on. The Winter League is well under way and the first of the six Winter Medals is on Sunday 2 January 2011.

This year I have two Captain’s charities - FARM-Africa and the Cots for Tots Appeal [which is part of the Wallace and Gromit’s Grand Appeal] in aid of the neo-natal Special Care Unit at St Michael’s Children’s Hospital in Bristol. Please support my Drive In on Sunday 19 December 2010 - tickets at £1 each are on sale in the Pro Shop.

My Captain’s week-end is booked for Saturday and Sunday 9 & 10 July 2011. There will be individual competitions on the Saturday with fabulous prizes, a social extravaganza on the Saturday evening [with casino and disco] and a team fancy dress competition on the Sunday. I promise you a fabulous week-end. Whatever you do, don’t miss it!

Up-coming events for your diary:

Saturday 4 December 2010: St Andrew’s Day Foursomes [Men’s, Ladies or Mixed pairs]. We already have over 50 pairs entered so the prizes will be excellent! The competition will go ahead unless we have really bad weather conditions later in the week. If the weather deteriorates please contact the Pro Shop on the day, as they will know whether we have had to postpone the event. Please don’t just fail to show!! The green-keeping staff will do their level best to insure that the competition goes ahead, as planned.

Saturday 18 December and Sunday 19 December 2010 - complimentary port and cheese in the Spikes Bar, followed by my Captain’s Drive In [on the 10th hole] on Sunday at 2:15 pm. All proceeds go to the Captain’s charities.

Sunday 13 February 2011 - Deerest Trophy [Mixed Pairs]. Details will be posted on the Mixed Notice Board and on the website early in January 2011.
